Chris Militzer, photo editor for Alexandria Living Magazine, had heard of Colonial Beach; he’d taken his daughter camping in nearby Westmoreland State Park numerous times.
But it wasn’t until he started seeing photos of the Town on Instagram and Twitter–gorgeous sunrises and sunsets, sandy beaches and marinas, and more–that Chris decided to have a look for himself.
Along with his wife and daughter, Chris spent three days touring Town, meeting business owners, talking to residents and participating in all the fun activities the Town of Colonial Beach has to offer.
Featured in the article are Colonial Beach Plaza Bed & Breakfast and River View Inn (lodging); Denson’s Grocery & R&B Oyster Bar, Dockside Restaurant and Tiki Bar, High Tides on the Potomac and The Black Pearl Tiki Bar, The Tides Inn Market, Monroe Bay Vineyards and The Lighthouse Thai & French Cuisine (food and drink); Bayside Marina, The Boathouse Marina and Colonial Beach Yacht Center (marinas).

“The original draws to this Virginia beach town are the ones that still endure.” ~ Chris Militzer
In just about an hour and a half, you can be sitting on a sandy beach, looking at palm trees, smelling the salt air and ordering your next Orange Crush from the tiki bar. Sounds too good to be true, but welcome to Colonial Beach, Virginia.
Once called the “Playground of the Potomac,†for decades Colonial Beach was a wildly popular site for people from D.C. and the surrounding area to vacation during the summer months. Located on Virginia’s Northern Neck about 60 miles from both D.C. and Richmond, it offered welcome relief for families during those hot times…
Colonial Beach really is a gem waiting to be rediscovered. Whether for a day trip or a weekend, it’s a great change of pace from the rest of the Northern Virginia area.
A print version of the story will be included in Alexandria Living Magazine’s September issue. Be sure to pick up a copy!
