NFL Star Torrey Smith Donates $185,000 to Build Recreation Park in Hometown of Colonial Beach, Virginia
Grand Opening Ribbon Cutting Ceremony July 16
Professional NFL football player Torrey Smith, wide receiver for the Carolina Panthers, pledged $185,000 toward the development of an outdoor recreation park in his hometown of Colonial Beach Virginia (CBVA). A year later, that dream has become a reality, with the grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony for the Torrey Smith Park scheduled for Tuesday, July 16, at 5 pm.
In a video posted to his social media in March of last year, Smith proposed the idea, crediting the community with making him who is today.
“I’ve been thinking about it for a while…I wouldn’t be here, right now, where I am…if it wasn’t for those opportunities. I can’t sit here, comfortable, knowing that there’s kids just like me…in my town, where they don’t have the same opportunities that I had. Let’s figure out how we can do it.â€~ Torrey Smith
Smith challenged his hometown to invest in its own future by raising a portion of the costs. Town government donated the land, located at Lynnhaven and Douglas Avenues, for the park and community residents worked tirelessly to raise the additional funds needed for the construction of two tennis courts, two basketball courts, a playground and picnic gazebo.
The celebration will include games such as basketball long shot and tennis contests, special guests, food, music, and an alumni basketball game.
