Mother’s Day isn’t canceled!
True, Mother’s Day 2020 is unlike any other. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic that’s infected the planet, a new normal has emerged, and perhaps no time is that more evident than on a holiday. Moms and their children are unable to celebrate as they normally might, due to restrictions aimed to flatten the curb of new virus cases. Mothers with young children may be forced to stay close to home, while older children may be unable to see their moms at all.
You CAN, however, ensure Mom, Grandma and other important women in your life feel loved and appreciated on their special day and still remain within safe, social distancing guidelines. Below are some ideas how. Contact individual businesses to inquire about their COVID-19 operational precautions.
Go out to eat–indoors
Taking Mom out to eat is a common occurrence on Mother’s Day. That’s not possible this year; but you can still enjoy a meal together! Several restaurants in Town of Colonial Beach are offering special Mother’s Day menus for take-out that you can enjoy in person or virtually together via FaceTime, Zoom or even over the phone.
In addition to its regular menu, Dockside Restaurant & Tiki Bar is serving a special spoil-your-mom seafood extravaganza of whole lobster, shrimp, and crab cakes on Sunday from 10 am to 3:30 pm.

Gifts from afar
All Mom really wants is to know that you care, especially during this time of isolation and quarantine. Phone or video calls or safe distancing visits make the best gifts! Meet in the yard and stay six feet apart or talk with Mom from outside her window. Homemade gifts including cards, drawings, playlists and other cherished gifts can be delivered to her doorstep.
If you want to do something extra, a bouquet of flowers are always uplifting. Lesleys.garden is offering big beautiful bouquets of petite roses and other varieties. Rankin’s Hardware Colonial Beach has hanging baskets of flowers in every size and color, as well as plants, seeds and other gardening supplies to occupy Mom’s time and help alleviate loneliness.
Peddlers Market and Colonial Beach Discount are reopening this Mother’s Day weekend so you can find the perfect, unique gift.
Shady Lane Seafood is offering gift cards for Mother’s Day. A gift certificate from her favorite restaurant, store or event are always welcome and give something to look forward to when restrictions are eased.
Entertain at home
With so many entertainment venues now offering online streaming, Mom will love a subscription to her favorite activity: musicals, movies, sports, TV shows, British comedy, nature, history, gaming, etc.
Celebrating Mother’s Day during this strange time requires creativity and imagination, but mothers will appreciate the efforts and cherish the memories.
