Abraham Lincoln gets all the credit, but did you know it was actually George Washington who issued the first proclamation declaring Thanksgiving a national holiday? (Read more about it in this article from Mount Vernon, the estate of George Washington.)

Colonial Beach, Virginia, has a special affinity for the first president of the United States. George Washington Birthplace National Monument, a unit of the National Park System, is located just outside of Colonial Beach, in the Northern Neck of VA.

Spend Thanksgiving weekend in a place that truly represents the history of the holiday. Colonial Beach is only minutes from the historical site. Several hotels and inns have specials and local restaurants will be serving their own version of a Thanksgiving feast!

Here’s where you can eat (then sleep!) in Colonial Beach, VA, this Thanksgiving:

Prefer to have your family Thanksgiving dinner at home? The Tides Inn Market will have a Thanksgiving sides and desserts menu prepared and available to order. Speaking of Thanksgiving Eve…many consider it to be the biggest drinking night of the year. Bars are packed with people returning to their hometown for the holidays and catching up with old friends. Colonial Beach Brewing will host Turkeyoke Karaoke and be serving Torrey Smith Toffee Stout, in support of the Water Tower Field Rec Park.
